New Socks for Homeless Shelters

Comfort the Feet, Comfort the Soul

Next Stop?.....

When my daughter was little we used to sit her on our knee and bounce her pretending to be a train. Her laughter increased everytime we say "Next Stop, Oklahoma," or "Next Stop Louisiana" or "Next Stop Ohio" (you get the picture).
This month, that memory made me smile as I boxed up over 600 pairs of socks on a Comfort Socks journey to NC, OHIO, and WA. Next stops will be Colorado, Illinois, and Mass. So grateful to have socks to send out.

There's just something about Socks....

We welcome 2 outstanding TV news channels to the Comfort Socks family. Both TV spots were outstanding, beautifully representing our mission. A HUGE thank you to Miss Jasmine Turner of WECT TV6 and Mr. Daniel Seamans, Anchor, WWAY TV3 for sharing the Comfort Socks mission. We're still beaming! Catch the clips below

Comfort Socks and YCS, sure been busy.

The Your City Sports and Comfort Socks partnership gave 1,288 pairs of socks to 7 shelters in August. We never came across a shelter for men over the age 55 before (St Martins DePorres) so we were grateful to have socks to send their way.  Here are the shelters where the socks went this month.

St Martins DePorres – WA
Stand up 4 Kids – WA
Visalia Rescue Mission – CA
Lighthouse Mission - WA
Community Action - OR
Sophia Way - WA
Anacortes Family Center - WA

This is the moment that Comfort Socks and YCS get really excited, to have provided the new clean socks to this street youth.

Read this recent Stand Up4Kids (Seattle) facebook post

Another warm night on street outreach... Didn't talk to many but gave out lots of supplies. One young lady wanted to thank us for coming out each week saying we really mean a lot to them.... Especially with clean fresh socks. She recently got 'boot rot' and has to walk around in flip flops for a couple of weeks until her feet heel. "Boot rot is a foot disease causing cracking, swollen, sore, peeling feet. It’s cause from your feet being constantly moist. You get moist/sweaty feet from walking a lot but rarely taking off your shoes." Another kid with her had the same issue and had his big toe bandaged up with a bad infection. Both were very grateful for new socks!

Starting this semester, every pair of Your City Sports socks sold at Grand Canyon University (GCU) will go to a Comfort Socks shelter. The chosen shelter is CASS (Central Arizona Shelter Services) in Phoenix. What's super exciting is that the students from GCU will be bringing the socks to this shelter themselves - it's a great experience for all!

This batch of Your City Sports socks went to The Community Action Hillsboro Oregon Family Shelter.

What’s Coming Up?

Stay tuned for more news on this, but a sneak peak – Kappa Sigma Fraternity is doing a 2 state sock drive on two weekends in Oct. Tentatively scheduled are Oct 3-4 and Oct 10-13. There’s about 10 chapters involved through out North and South Carolina. YAY Kappa Sigma, get those socks !

Now that's what we're talkin about! They raised money, got socks and handkerchiefs, and wrote words of hope and encouragement on the handkerchiefs. Then lovingly wrapped them up. Now that's what we're talking about!

Teachers and youth leaders, assignment #1) we want to hear your kids creative ideas on how to collect socks. http://www.comfortsocks.org/volunteer.php

Churches want to get involved? How about a Socks on Sunday event? http://www.comfortsocks.org/events.php

Every November, Brunswick Plantation's Neighbors in Service does an amazing sock drive for Comfort Socks. I mean it, they go all out, driving around in golf carts picking up socks that hang from the mailboxes. We appreciate them so much and the homeless appreciate the thousands of pairs they collect. So I'd like to ask our local friends and followers to please come down to their Arts and Crafts Fair - there'll be plenty of smiling faces, awesome baked goods and much to see. Thank you, Neighbors in Service for all you do!

Please prayerfully consider a monthly giving amount
